Area Info: Friendly, walkable college town of about 101,000 residents in California’s Sacramento Valley, home to California State University, Chico. It’s the cultural and economic hub of the northern valley — big enough for variety, small enough to still feel like a community where neighbors know each other. Outdoor lovers will appreciate Bidwell Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country, offering hiking, swimming holes, and trails just minutes from downtown, plus a lively Saturday farmers market. The public schools are highly rated. Cost of living is well below major California metros — home prices, rent, and groceries are all notably more affordable than in San Francisco or the Bay Area. Between the university energy, the natural beauty, and the strong sense of community, this city is a genuinely appealing place to put down roots.
