Happiness Is Worth the Effort
Happiness Is Worth the Effort
Life doesn’t always go as planned. However, happiness isn’t determined by our circumstances—it’s shaped by how we respond to them. It’s that classic glass-half-full versus glass-half-empty perspective.
Let’s say you lose your job. You could panic and fall into fear. Or instead, you do what a former candidate did – she took her husband out to dinner and celebrated the blank slate in front of her. She was scared but chose to make it opportunity. She toasted, what’s next.
That mindset makes all the difference.
Lessons from the Happiest Dog I Know
I have three dogs—a golden retriever, a mutt, and a corgi. They’re all a blast. But my golden retriever? She’s pure joy in motion. Every day is a celebration for her. She lives for the her ball, backyard zoomies, belly rubs, and human connection. Her tail doesn’t stop wagging. She’s also a therapy dog—and honestly, she was born for it.
Even when she’s disappointed, it only lasts a few seconds. Then she’s back to nudging your hand for affection. She never gives up on love. Maybe that’s the key: Don’t give up. Don’t give in. Keep going.
Happiness Is a Choice—And a Challenge
Sure, life can throw hard things our way. But how we deal with those things? That’s up to us. Every day, we choose whether or not to lean into happiness.
As Aristotle said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” He was right.
Still, happiness doesn’t always come easily. It takes intention. Sometimes it takes every ounce of determination, persistence, and discipline we can find. As Andrew Matthews writes in Being Happy, “Being happy can be one of the greatest challenges we face.”
So what do happy people do differently?
Habits of Happy People
- They look for good, even when it’s hard to find.
- They dream big—and let themselves get excited about what’s possible.
- They take care of themselves, physically and emotionally.
- They practice gratitude—finding joy in simple things.
- They let go of the small stuff, and don’t dwell on what they can’t control.
- They surround themselves with optimism—especially in the people they choose to spend time with.
In other words, they make happiness part of their lifestyle—not something they chase later.
You Can’t Wait for Happiness to Show Up
Happiness isn’t a destination. There’s no magical day when life will finally be “perfect,” and everything will fall into place.
Too often, people live with an “I’ll be happy when…” mindset:
- I’ll be happy when I get that promotion.
- I’ll be happy when the kids are older.
- I’ll be happy when I retire.
Unfortunately, that kind of thinking pushes happiness further and further away.
Reality Check: Life Is What It Is
If we’re unhappy, it’s often because reality isn’t matching how we think it should be. We focus on what’s missing rather than what’s here.
Eventually, that disconnect becomes frustrating—and exhausting.
So what’s the alternative?
Accept what is. Love what is.
Have preferences, sure—but choose to be happy whether or not those preferences are met.
As the Indian guru once told a pupil searching for peace:
“If you want to be happy—BE HAPPY.”
Happiness Is a Daily Decision
Each day, we get to decide:
- Will I make the most of today?
- Will I find joy even if things aren’t perfect?
- Will I stop waiting for some imaginary moment when everything will feel right?
Because guess what? This is it. Life is already happening. So why not choose to be happy now?
Like a Garden—Tend to It
Think of happiness like maintaining a beautiful garden. You have to care for the flowers and pull out the weeds. It’s not automatic—it takes effort.
The same goes for our mental and emotional well-being.
Focus on the good.
Protect your peace.
Tend to what you want to grow.
The Final Word? You Decide
The world isn’t perfect. Life doesn’t always play fair. Still, you get to decide how you feel about it. That power is yours.
So go ahead—choose to be happy. Not later. Not someday. Now.
I choose happiness today. What about you?
Have a tremendous day—and don’t forget, happiness is worth the effort.Have a tremendous day!
I choose to be happy. What about you?
